Benefits of Allotments
Growing vegetables and fruit in an allotment has a wide range of benefits, from improving your health to saving you money !
We always seem to be encouraged to get more exercise and gardening is a great way of doing this, with the additional benefit that (hopefully) you get something to eat at the end of the day. Spending time outdoors in the fresh air is also beneficial, even if it does rain sometimes !
Another great advantage of allotments is the freshness of the food you grow to eat. Supermarket vegetables are fresh, but nowhere near as fresh as self grown veg. You can pick, cook and eat within the hour if you want to and you will notice the difference in taste.
Finally seeds are really quite cheap, especially if you buy them from local suppliers who focus on vegetables (not garden centres). So you save money overall, even if the pigeons did eat some of your crop, and if you choose to grow more expensive crops (maybe asparagus, strawberries or other soft fruit) you can save even more.
And don't forget the social aspect - all of us like to chat and you can learn a lot from those who have been doing it for years.....
