Is much work involved ?
You should be under no illusions, allotments are quite hard work and need regular attention. If you can only spare an hour or so a month, then you will not be able to keep a plot in decent condition. But with more regular attention, especially to the weeds, you can achieve a lot.
We do expect plots to be regularly maintained, otherwise the weeds flower, seeds fly all over the field and everyone else suffers from this. It is an unfortunate fact of life that whilst the weather might not be ideal to germinate and grow the vegetables that we plant, you can guarantee that it will be absolutely perfect for certain weeds to flower and flourish.
A lot depends on the state of the plot when you take it over. If it is in a bad state, then we all understand that it takes time to improve matters. However if it is in good condition, then it should not take too much effort to maintain that state.
Plot holders are also expected to maintain the grass paths around their plot. We have a small lawnmower that can be hired if you need one, also a rotavator to help you turn over the soil - but don't use this if you have weeds such as couch grass as all you will do is to cut up the roots and create a bigger problem.
